The Bold and Beautiful: Isthmus Zapotec Dress
Location: Curator's Corner
Open: November 11, 2024
Lead Curator: Kaila Cogdill, Curator of Collections Impact
Curator’s Corner features objects from IUMAA’s collection which come from various regions globally and are directly related to peoples from diverse cultures internationally. The Museum cares for these items in partnership with descendant communities and other external stakeholders, IU departments, faculty, and students.
The first iteration of Curator’s Corner highlights objects from Juchitán, Oaxaca, Mexico. This Indigenous community is known for its elaborate garments known as the traje bordado with bold geometric designs, floral patterns, and prints.
We would like to thank the Isthmus Zapotec Community of Juchitán, Dr. Anya Peterson Royce, and poet Irma Pineda for making this exhibition possible.
